Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow)

Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is a painful condition of the elbow caused by overuse of the elbow tendons. This inflammation of the tendons that join the forearm muscles on the outside of the elbow leads to pain.

As the name suggests, the force of hitting tennis balls in the backhand position or other racquet sports can cause this condition. However, many other activities can also put you at risk – particularly if you have weaker shoulder and wrist muscles, or perform any repetitive movement with your arms and hands.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain or weakness when gripping
  • Aches or pains in the forearm or elbow area
  • Wrist pain, even when you are resting

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis occurs when the plantar fascia, the tissue that supports the arch of your foot, becomes irritated and inflamed form movement. The stress of this tendon from placing weight on the foot, such as pushing off the balls of the foot and toes, causes pain over time as the fascia loses its elasticity.

It is the most common cause of pain on the bottom of the heel and can be caused by a number of different conditions such as types of shoes, foot structure, and overuse.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain in the heel
  • Gradual pain over time
  • Stabbing pain with your first steps in the morning

Patellar Tendinitis (Jumper’s Knee)

Patellar tendinitis is an injury to the patellar tendon, the tendon connecting your kneecap (patella) to your shinbone (tibia). This pain often comes from overusing the knee joint, especially when jumping on harder surfaces after periods of intense use.

Jumper’s knee is most commonly a sports injury in athletes whose sport involves frequent jumping, such as basketball and volleyball – but, everyone can get patellar tendinitis.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain around the knee
  • Swelling
  • Pain when moving the leg

Achilles Tendinitis

Achilles tendinitis is a common condition that occurs from overuse of the Achilles tendon, the largest tendon in the body that connects your calf muscles to your heel.

Achilles tendinitis is common in runners since the repetitive motion of calf muscles supporting runners creates inflammation.

Common Symptoms

  • Aches in the back of the leg after activity
  • Pain after running or stair climbing
  • Stiffness in the morning

Rotator Cuff Tendinitis

Rotator cuff tendinitis, also known as shoulder bursitis or shoulder impingement, is pain and swelling of the cuff tendons and surrounding area. Rotator cuff injury is common in both young athletes and middle-aged adults, happening in stages over a long period of time after repetitive movements.

Those who use their arms overhead, such as lifting or swimming, are particularly vulnerable as these activities cause continual pinching of a tendon of the rotator cuff.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain or swelling in the shoulder
  • Limited motion
  • Weakness in the arm
